"As an artist, one strives to reflect before one can move forward."
Simon Parker was an active member of Arena Studios in Liverpool between 1988 and 2001 and exhibited his paintings regularly in Liverpool, Manchester, London and other venues nationally. In 2001 Simon went into teaching and soon became Head of Art. He currently teaches painting, drawing and photography at a Visual Arts College in Chester. Over the past 9 years, the department has gained a national reputation for excellence within art education. During this time, Simon has engaged with the SSAT nationally and has led a range of workshops, using both digital and traditional media. He has also curated a series of national exhibitions of students' artwork at venues such as the Baltic Gallery, Newcastle, the Barbican, London, the London College of Fashion and the National Conference Centre in Harrogate.
In 2008, Simon was selected by the SSAT as a lead practitioner to develop his practice in raising awareness and encouraging achievement in art education. Simon worked in conjunction with the Glyndwr School of Art and Design to facilitate a cross fertilisation of ideas between schools and higher education establishments and disseminated best practices for both teachers and students alike. Simon is currently working with the SSAT and the Crafts Council to organise a national workshop for teachers that will focus on raising awareness of, and using contemporary approaches to crafts within school settings.
"Photography has been a great inspiration for me over the past few years. Walking through the landscape, chasing light and rhythm to form an evocative, emotive response has brought me back to painting. Working in two mediums informs new ideas and opportunities to connect and respond, thereby challenging the way in which we perceive the world around us. The opportunity to share both a common dialogue and the differences between my photography and painting raises interesting questions."
