Liverpool based Maria has always had a deep rooted fascination with animals, and has always been inspired to draw them. Maria?s wider interests include 3D design in the form of Interiors, Architecture and the natural and built environment. Since leaving University in 2001 she has completed Interior Design commissions and is currently setting up her own Interior practice.
She has a strong background in 3D design and what really interests her about animals is how they are "constructed"; she observes their structures, their different textures, their abilities, e.g. are they runners, climbers, flyers, fighters and how does this affect how they are put together? For example, a working horse may be incredibly strong with visible skeletal and muscular structure whilst a pet cat may be all fur with very little visible structure. Trying to depict this in a realistic way and get a sense of the animal is what she tries to achieve.
The two disciplines of drawing and design feed very nicely into each other. Her interior work benefits from her awareness of different colours and textures, gained through detailed animal drawing. In return her drawing benefits from her Interior work through constant visualisation in 3D which helps when trying to keep her drawings from looking flat. Maria draws in a variety of mediums depending on what she is trying to achieve, however, her animal drawings are completed mainly in graphite pencil or pastel pencil as this allows her to achieve a high level of detail. She takes commission for her animal drawings in addition to producing work for her own pleasure.
