John has had a lifelong interest in art. Both as a student and as a tutor, he specialised in the traditional craft of oil painting. Nevertheless, in his own work John does not confine himself to a fixed medium, style or subject; rather he enjoys the flexibility of painting a variety of subjects, using different styles: traditional, figurative and abstract. He is equally at home working in oils, gouache and acrylics, and as far as he is aware he is the only exponent of the technique of "Cinada".
John is a member of several art institutions and societies; he was a Founder Member of the Studio Five Group of UK artists and for several years was Senior Director and Trustee of the Bridge Arts Centre, an entirely voluntary project which attracted some 400 artists, writers and poets and over 150OOO visitors, in 2006 he took part in a television documentary featuring artists working in the North West.
Throughout his artistic career John has exhibited in regional and local galleries and exhibitions and examples of his work can be found in several private and corporate collections. Since retiring from his career in commerce he has pursued his interest in art, developing and exploring new ideas and concepts.
John dedicates all his paintings to his late wife Marie.
