Jean grew up in Liverpool in the 60's and
left school at the age of 16. Twenty years later she was able to return
to education, undertaking a foundation course in art and design at
Southport College. This was followed by an HND in 3D design with ceramics
at the University of Central Lancashire and then, in 2001, an MA
in design.
Fired with enthusiasm for clay and its possibilities, Jean
set up her own studio practice in 1991. From there she began to
explore how to re-interpret the 3 dimensionality of her
figurative clay pieces onto a flat canvas and came to love the immediacy
and potential of working with paint.
"I enjoy a sense of release and freedom when I am
painting. A bit like a child running through a field, there are so
many exciting things to discover, so many places to go and so many
different ways to get there. The adult me tries to control and the
child to escape. My work can be inspired by people or by places, how people move and
interact or how a place can change. I begin with something I've
observed or remembered and then take a journey to somewhere new,
and I never quite know where that will be. For me that's the excitement
and the challenge of painting."
