I graduated with a BA (Hons) degree (2:1) in fine art from UWIC, Cardiff in 2002. At my degree show, my painting "Hot Pepper Sauce" was awarded The Welsh Assembly's Award for Fine Art. Since then I have personally taken part in more than seventy-five exhibitions.
As part of my studies, in 2001, I traveled to Italy for three months after receiving the Dulcie Mayne Stephens Award and studied as part of an Erasmus exchange at at L'Accademia di Belle arti. While I was there, I learnt some of the language & organised an exhibition with two other artists. I was recently one of three finalists of the Enterprise Award at the North West region Princes Trust Celebrate Success Awards.
My paintings are developed from my ink and watercolour drawings of everyday and familiar / found objects. When I have finished the drawing, I look at what is there and then create one or even several paintings as a result of the drawing. I decide what to choose for the painting based on aesthetics. All of the imperfections from my drawings are included in my paintings. For example, where I might have spilt ink on the page or drips of paint. To me these imperfections are part of what makes up the painting. I then loosely paint everything I have drawn onto the canvas & any further imperfections are used to make up the basis of the painting. The piece is finished off with exacting precision incorporating the said mistakes. I use bold bright colour, surrounded by fluid black outlines and large areas of white. In my photography, I like to focus in on everyday objects similar to the way I draw. The things that people may not notice.
