My work is about colour and colour relationships. I use complementary colours against and overlaid, one next to the other or on top, as a thin wash or glaze to enhance the contrast, to create a certain tension. I use pure colour, rarely white, never black. Purple is my black. This keeps the colours vibrant.
Pastel colours are used to give a strong contrast against the pure colour, to act as a counterpoint to the colour, again creating a tension. Simplified shape is defined by colour. Soft edges, rather than hard edges, are important to frame the work, exposing their construction of overlaid colour.
The subject of my current work is the cityscape around Manchester and Salford, in particular focusing between the two cities along the River Irwell - Manchester as seen from Salford and Salford as seen from Manchester, again creating a tension.
